Http monitoring Firefox with Fiddler

Posted: March 14, 2010 in HTTP

If you want to monitor requests made in Firefox with Fiddler, you have to configure the Firefox proxy settings first. Fiddler by default uses the proxy address of and port 8888. In Firefox click Tools -> Options, choose the ‘Network’ tab, under ‘Connection’ choose ‘Settings’.

Tools -> Options

Firefox -> Tools -> Options

The ‘Connection Settings’ window pops up. Choose ‘Manual proxy configuration’, and set ‘HTTP Proxy:’ to ‘’ and ‘Port:’ to ‘8888’.
Also check the option ‘Use this proxy server for all protocols’.

Connection Settings

Connection Settings

And now Fiddler will monitor your HTTP requests!

Be aware of the following facts with IIS 7.0:

You can set application pool defaults here:

E.g you can enable 32-bit application support for all app pools like this:

If you run into trouble with this, you can reset the setting using adminscripts in a command prompt:

cscript c:\inetpub\adminscripts\adsutil.vbs SET /w3svc/AppPools/Enable32BitAppOnWin64 False

IIS 7.0: 503 service unavailable

Posted: December 16, 2009 in IIS 7.0

A lot of people have experienced the dreaded “503. The service is unavailable” error with IIS 7.0.

Lots of different symptoms, causes and solutions are outlined on the web, but none of them seemed to solve my problem until I found this post:

The IIS7 Team Rocks!

netsh http show urlacl

showed me that I had reserved http://+80/ for my user. God knows how that had happened, but it’s evidently no good.

Removing the reservation was done by this command, and voila, the 503 was gone!

netsh http delete urlacl url=http://+:80/

This post does a good job in describing the problems, and the faulted attempts to solve the problem until the solution described over appeared.

When you create Windows Services you need to add an Installer class to the project.
1) Right- click the service and choose to view in designer mode.

service class

2) Right-click the surface and select “Add Installer”

3) You get a new file with two components on the design surface: ServiceProcessInstaller and ServiceInstaller

4) Configure the two components with account info and other service details

IIS 7.0 vs. 6.0

In IIS 7.0 you’ll always want an Application, not a virtual directory. An application has its own copy of web.config. The web.config holds the application settings for that virtual directory.
U can now configure the virtual directory in the web.config fil and then simply copy the web.config file with the application.

Scripts maps (in IIS 6.0) is called Handler Mappings in IIS 7.0.
