IIS 7.0: 503 service unavailable

Posted: December 16, 2009 in IIS 7.0

A lot of people have experienced the dreaded “503. The service is unavailable” error with IIS 7.0.

Lots of different symptoms, causes and solutions are outlined on the web, but none of them seemed to solve my problem until I found this post:

The IIS7 Team Rocks!

netsh http show urlacl

showed me that I had reserved http://+80/ for my user. God knows how that had happened, but it’s evidently no good.

Removing the reservation was done by this command, and voila, the 503 was gone!

netsh http delete urlacl url=http://+:80/

This post does a good job in describing the problems, and the faulted attempts to solve the problem until the solution described over appeared.
